Thousands of years ago, Abraham carefully negotiated his involvement in his hosts’ society and his fidelity to his own traditions when he uttered the phrase, “I am a stranger and a citizen together with you.” This verse has inspired Jews throughout the generations, from Abraham through the early days of America and to our current times. Finding the right balance between these two ideas is one of the secrets to Jewish survival.
