One of the happiest traditions at Park Avenue Synagogue, the Purim Spiel, has long been an opportunity to nurture young talent – notably the then-aspiring songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1924. Also included in that list are Ryan House and Daniel Schwartz, who performed this song on Kol Nidrei.
The words of this song are drawn from a Sephardi piyyut full of longing and hope: “Ben adam ma l'kha nirdam kum k'ra b'tahanunim (Humankind – why do you sleep? Rise and weep, your soul to keep).”
