4m 15s
In an anguished time, we sing of taking delight from keeping Shabbat. Interestingly, the reverse is also true: the rhythm of this musical setting of a joyful prayer is tinged with melancholy. Perhaps that alloy is what makes deep joy more powerful than happiness – the knowledge that the Jewish people are always in both delight and despair.
Music: Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt (1882–1933), arranged by Raymond Goldstein (commissioned by PAS Music Center)
Performed by: Cantor Azi Schwartz & Cantor Mira Davis
Music Director: David Enlow
Musicians: Reva Youngstein, Dan Block, Andrew Sterman, Michael Hey
AV: Oscar Acevedo, Erik van Batavia, Justin Goodman
